DGPS 4U Ltd Satellite Guidance and Auto Steering Systems
Over the past three years, I’ve written a number of articles for Farm Machinery Journal on entry level satellite guidance and auto steering systems that can be successfully used with classic and modern classic tractors and other self-propelled agricultural machinery.
In 2023 I visited North Yorkshire based mixed farmer John Stonehouse, who works closely with DGPS 4U Ltd founder Jim Sugden. John originally ran Jim’s 'Jethro' guidance system - essentially a radar antenna and screen that could be retro-fitted to all types of tractors and self-propelled machinery, fitted with a battery and a power source. The program was designed to run through the Windows operating system on a personal computer.
John has since upgraded to DGPS 4U’s V-Smart antenna, which features hillside compensator and radar output signals and also comes with a position update rate of 10Hz as standard. More recently, he has invested in their entry level RTK base station kit to use specifically with his two drills, a 4m wide Farm Force tine drill used behind a 215hp Massey Ferguson 8250 and a 3m Kuhn Venta combination drill that’s used with a 180hp Same Iron 165.7.
From the end of 2023, John also began evaluating and using DGPS 4U’s entry level auto steering system with the 8250, thus allowing him to plough on land more efficiently with a modified Dowdeswell MA140 plough.
