Self-Propelled Sprayers at Cereals 2003
Cereals 2025 will soon be upon us and this year the event returns to Heath Farm in Lincolnshire for the first time in 17 years. The 52-hectare site will host 400 exhibitors and 200 live demonstrations on June 11th and 12th.
One of the most popular attractions at the event is the Syngenta Sprays and Sprayers Arena that showcases the latest mounted, trailed and self-propelled sprayers in a dedicated demonstration area. More recently drone spraying technology has taken centre stage too.
Sprays and Sprayers was originally held as a standalone event before joining forces with Cereals in 2002. A year later at Cereals 2003 the National Register of Sprayer Operators (NRoSO), a nationwide program for training and certifying sprayer operators was officially launched by DEFRA Secretary Lord Whitty.
I attended Cereals for the first time in 2003 whilst studying at Askham Bryan Agricultural College and took lots of photographs of the event and the Sprays and Sprayers Arena with several disposable film cameras. Below is a selection of some of the most interesting self-propelled sprayers on display that year.
These included the AGCO 4440 Spray Coupe that was powered by a 110hp Perkins engine, Land Quip’s mighty Field Leader that featured a 5000-litre tank and was powered by a 155hp John Deere engine, and the Italian built Bargam MAC 4000 S. British manufacturer Chafer was showcasing the second generation of its Mirage self-propelled sprayer that featured a raft of chassis upgrades.
